ABOUT US

REBUILDING YOUNG PEOPLE'S CONFIDENCE THROUGH SAILING

Bufforp Cancer Foundation was founded to help families touched by cancer. This was our way of repaying the help and support we received when the ones we loved were fighting cancer.

For many young people simply picking up where they left off before their cancer diagnosis just isn’t possible.

With 23,000 young people affected by cancer each year, we’re helping these young Australians rebuild and form foundations for the future at a crucial development time in their lives.

Through sailing and outdoor activity, young people…

  • build confidence by making friends with others who have had similar experiences – often for the first time.
  •  rediscover independence away from home and outside of their ‘cancer bubble’.
  • begin to realise what they are capable of again.
  • stop feeling like the ‘only one’.

Their mental wellbeing improves, and they can start to re-establish their place in the world by getting back into education or employment and reconnecting with their friends and families.

Every young person should feel valued, accepted, optimistic and independent living through and beyond cancer.

After my cancer journey I’m always looking for new ways to get out of my comfort zone and it’s been amazing to get to know people who have gone through similar journeys.

OUR TRIPS

More than just a sailing trip, with Bufforp Cancer Foundation young people have the opportunity to rebuild their confidence as they start to re-establish their place in the world. Every young person takes something unique from their trip.

First time trips for young people

Our 4 day trips see groups of young people dealing with cancer sail Sydney Harbour on the Flying Fish luxury yacht Calypso, living on board and being taught sailing by highly qualified Royal Yachting Assocation (RYA) yacht master instructors and crew.

Respite trips for families

We also run 2 day trips with an overnight stay on the boat for families whose children are recovering from cancer.

Sailing social trip

Our day trips for larger groups of young people act as a try sailing and meet your peers experience.

MEET OUR PARTNERS

Flying Fish Sail Academy is perfectly placed to organise and run sailing trips and adventures as this is what they do every day.
Bufforp Cancer Foundation partnered with Canteen as they work with over 70% of all young people touched by cancer.

Flying Fish Sail Academy is one of Australia’s most prestigious sailing schools specialising in Royal Yachting Association (RYA) yacht master fast track courses for professional sailors who
wish to work as crew on luxury super yachts around the world. Flying Fish was established over 25 years ago and has trained thousands of today’s sailing professionals.

Canteen supports young people aged 12-25 who have been impacted by cancer. Through Canteen they learn to explore and deal with their feelings about cancer, connect with other young people in the same boat and, if they’ve been diagnosed themselves, Canteen provides specialist, youth-specific treatment teams.
